What tachographs to install and can they be fooled?

Under Russian law, legal entities and individual entrepreneurs engaged in commercial transportation are required to equip their vehicles with tachographs.

An on-board recorder is necessary for measuring and recording vehicle motion parameters. The device also reads the time that the driver spends on work and rest.

The functionality of the device is based on recording and transmitting information, which is used later to account for the necessary data. The indicators read by the device help fleet owners control the speed and mileage of the vehicle. The presence of a tachograph in the machine affects the correct accounting and analysis of data.

What are tachographs?

According to the method of recording information, tachographs are divided into analog and digital. The former record information on tachodisk, the latter on an electronic card.

Flight recorders are also divided by legal subordination:

  • AETR (analog and digital);
  • without cryptographic information protection;
  • with the NKM block (SKZI).

SKZI tachographs are most often installed in Russia, because they are focused on domestic transportation. It is strictly forbidden to travel with such a tachograph outside the Russian Federation. This is due to the fact that a cryptographic information protection unit is installed inside the recorder, the components and software of which are a state secret.

How to trick a tachograph?

In the past, drivers often cheated on their employers. Dishonest employees opened analog tachographs and disabled flight recorders. A digital tachograph cannot be fooled on its own. To do this, you need the help of a wizard or the ability to deal with the “black box” software of the car.

The GLONASS receiver, which duplicates the vehicle readings, and the mounted accelerometer are installed in the digital tachograph. The latter almost completely eliminates fraud on the part of the driver.

During operation, the tachograph is also connected to the on-board computer, which receives all the information about the movement of the car. If you turn it off, crashes and erroneous readings may appear. The dispatcher can find out about this and catch the driver responsible for the fraud.

Errors in the readings can be checked in the report. It will display information about power failure, speeding and turning off the speed sensor.

Do not forget that unauthorised manipulations with the tachograph are illegal.

What punishment awaits the driver in case of cheating?

Using a faulty tachograph or opening its mechanical part can lead to serious consequences for the driver. Usually, after such manipulations, the employee not only loses his job, but also pays a fine of about three thousand rubles.

For officials, an administrative penalty can reach ten thousand rubles.

Tachographs must be installed on the following vehicles:

  • cars transporting dangerous goods;
  • passenger cars weighing more than five tons;
  • trucks weighing 3.5-12 tons;
  • trucks weighing more than 12 tons.
